1. Bags

Participants will receive Conference bags when registering at the Welcome/Registration Desk. Remember that the bags all look alike. Please put your name on or in your bag as soon as you receive it, and do not leave valuable items in it.

2. Cell Phones

Participants are kindly requested to turn off their cell phones when entering the meeting rooms and in the poster areas.

3. Children

For safety reasons children under the age of 12 are not permitted in the exhibition hall, poster zones, or conference rooms.

4. City Map

A city map is provided in the Conference bags. The map can be looked on the Internet : kiev2000.com/map, kievmap.com.ua.

5. Climate and Clothing

Kiev has a continental humid climate. The weather in October is usually variable with day temperatures around 8-15C. However, mornings can be a bit cooler. Rain is often possible. A sweater or a jacket may be necessary.

6. Credit Cards

Major international credit cards are accepted in hotels, larger shops and restaurants in Kyiv.

7. Currency

The basic unit of Ukrainian currency is the “Hryvnia”. Exchange centers can be found at the airport, most hotels, banks and shops. Official exchange rate of Hryvnia against foreign currencies:

8. Electricity

The standard electricity network in Ukraine uses 220 volts; the frequency is 50 Hz and the plugs have two male contact pins.

9. Equipment in the Session Rooms

A video-projector, a screen, and a computer will be available in each room assigned for a scientific session. Other projection devices (slide and overhead projectors, etc) may be available upon request.

10. Insurance

The organizers will accept no liability for personal injuries sustained by or for loss or damage to property belonging to congress participants, either during or as a result of the congress or during any tours and events. Participants are strongly recommended to buy insurance coverage for health and accident, lost luggage and trip cancellation.

11. Internet

Connections The CODATA 2008 LOC will provide internet connections in cyber-space. In these areas participants can use Cyber Space computers to access the internet.

12. Lost and Found

Lost items should be returned to the reception area.

13. Official language

The official language of the Conference will be English.

14. Telephones

To call a number inside Kyiv just dial the number. To make a long-distance telephone call, dial 8, wait for the dial tone and then dial the city code and number. To call Kyiv from another town, dial 8, wait for the tone, dial Kyiv’s city code (044) and then the number. To make an international call, dial 8, wait for the tone, and then dial 10 plus the country code, city code and number itself.

15. Transportation in Kyiv

a. Metro (subway)
The jewel of transport system, the metro is both cheap and efficient. While traffic snarls vehicles above ground, underground trains deliver passengers in a more timely and reliable fashion. All metro stations entrances are clearly marked. One ride costs 50 kopecks, for which you receive a green plastic token to insert into a machine.

b. Trolleybuses, trams and buses
A network of trolleybuses, trams and buses covers the entire city. Single tickets for trolleys, trams and buses cost 50 kopecks.

c. Taxi
In Ukraine every car is a potential taxi – just hold your arm out any street. Most taxis don’t have meters, so you’ll likely have to agree on a price with your driver. Minimum price for the one travel is approximately 25 Hryvnias. Taxis can be ordered by phone (Evro Taxi 249 40 40; Shanson Taxi 548 28 28; Delta Taxi 495 19 19).
